So your puppy dreams of being the next Lionel Messi? Or should I say Lionel Mastiff?
If you are a soccer fan or if your dog likes to chase after bigger balls, a soccer ball may be the best toy for your dog.
But with so many options, which football is best for your dog?
We were wondering the same thing…
In total we tested more than 13 different soccer balls, played hundreds of games and chased our dog until we pooped, day after day.
Here are some of the different dog safe soccer balls we have tested….

Leisure soccer
Let me be honest. This ball is made of durable rubber. If you’re looking for something you can easily touch over a long period of time, skip that choice.
I was actually shocked when I tried to hit the ball with all my might. I didn’t expect the ball to be so hard – it doesn’t have the same bounce as a normal football. Still, pedalling is pretty easy.
The high-quality rubber makes it an ideal bullet for small destroyers and large breeds with strong bites, such as German shepherds. That bullet could be a lot of abuse. Look at this…

Even with hundreds of pricks, he kept his shape. There’s no ventilation here and no blockage! It’s as close as you can get to an indestructible football.
The Fun Soccer Ball is available in two sizes:
size | Ball size | Weight dog |
---|---|---|
Small | 6 inches | 0-40 pounds. |
Great | 8 inches | Weight over 40 pounds |
If you want the size to be close to the size of the regular football, choose a larger ball.
However, if your dog is a small breed, such as B. a Boston Terrier or even a puppy, you should consider our next choice.
You see, even a small size can be too big for your dog to wrap his jaws around. But that won’t stop your puppy from trying….
If the small size was too big for our French bulldog, she still liked to go after them….
We didn’t have any punctures during the tests. However, based on my observation of dogs carrying a big ball, I suspect that the bigger one will break first.
Due to its size, the few dogs that can carry the ball with their incisors and canines – the sharp teeth in front of the dog’s mouth.
Not that it’s a problem. Like any other chew toy, the Jolly Soccer Ball should only be used under supervision as a chew toy – not given to your dog as a chew toy.
Jolly Soccer Ball is available in 3 colours and 2 are flavoured:
- Blue – odourless
- Green – Apple
- Orange-vanilla scent
The smell will disappear soon. We barely noticed it after a few play sessions. So choose the color you prefer.
I might add that this football floats. If you kick the ball and it bounces in your pool, you don’t have to worry about it sinking to the bottom.
The most important thing is that the Jolly Soccer Ball is made here in the United States. I wish more companies would do that.
If you’re looking for a leakproof football for your bullshit, this is the best we can do.

Chakit! Kick-Fetch
Straight ahead, Chakit! Kick Fetch is not like traditional football.
These grooves make this ball perfect for dogs of all sizes. They give your dog something to bite while they drag him to you. Even a puppy can stand it!
alt= Best football for dogs of all sizes, width=232 height=160 data-ezsrc=http://server.digimetriq.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/1608639854_284_4-Best-Dog-proof-Soccer-Balls-For-Dogs-Of-All-Sizes.jpg />
It is a cloth and the rubber on the outside hides the foam core. It’s the moss that makes Kick Fetch so easy to hit. I was able to cover a long distance with a minimum of effort.
I would add that if your dog is a munchkin, you should follow our first recommendation. The cloth tears quickly when a large dog, for example B. a boxer or a Labrador, chews on it.
alt=Bits for dogs of all sizes, width=244 height=173 data-ezsrc=http://server.digimetriq.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/1608639855_537_4-Best-Dog-proof-Soccer-Balls-For-Dogs-Of-All-Sizes.jpg />
But if your dog wears it instead of chewing it, Kick Fetch is strong enough to last a year. Except for a few punctures in the rubber surface, the bullet held during the test.
Kick Fetch is available in two sizes:
size | Ball size |
---|---|
Small | 5¾ |
Great | 7½ inches. |
If you are looking for something close to the size of a normal football, I recommend the largest size. This will give you more room to strike.
Chakit! also makes a phosphorescent version for the night shafts. It’s nice to see the black dog chasing the glowing sphere that seems to be carrying itself towards you.
While the phosphorescent version stood up well in our tests, I will note that users found this model to be less durable than the bright orange version. Maybe that’s why the phosphorescent version is much cheaper.
Whichever version you choose, both go forward. If you’re looking for a soft and easy to handle football, Chakit! Kicking is second to none. Don’t forget to get rid of your dog when the game is over!

Nerf Football squeaker
Does your dog like football and squeaky things? Nerf combined them into a heavy toy that entertained our dogs for hours – and made them wag their tails every time they squealed.
Unfortunately, if you want a squeaky football, you’ll have to compromise on size. By the way, the Nerf Soccer Squeaker is available in three sizes….
Type | Ball size |
---|---|
Small | 2½ inch |
Medium | 3 ¼ |
Great | 4 inches |
Since the largest size is about half the size of an adjustable soccer ball, these balls are more suitable to throw than to kick, especially the smaller balls.
The smallest ball is about the size of a tennis ball and fits in our chakit! Dogball thrower. It’s a big ball the size of a softball.
I am happy to report that the durable rubber is very resistant to biting during the game. Our laboratory tester likes to break eggs by biting them. She couldn’t get past the long one.
However, if you have hardcore like Pitbull, that squeak won’t last long. If your dog likes to eat, you should watch the Orby Tuff Squeaky Ball. This soccer ball should be used as a toy to take back, not as a chew toy.
Despite the hardwearing rubber, I was surprised that this ball was thrown once with a good bounce. I couldn’t make the ball squeak when I bounced it, but once it was caught by our testers, they were glad it squeaked. Especially our Australian shepherd was enthusiastic about this discovery.
If you want a squeaky football, that’s the best he can do!

Football cushion
Okay, this isn’t a dog toy. It is actually meant for small children, who find the soccer balls too hard to hit. But it performs better than the plush football we tested, which is specially made for dogs.
I must now point out that this recommendation only applies to dogs that do not like to chew on their stuffed animals and tear off the stuffing or aggressively shake their toys. Take our golden retriever, for example. She was happier to keep the soccer ball in her mouth and carry it around the house.
As a plush toy, this football is not very suitable for playing outdoors. If you do, you’ll get dirty soon. But if you want to play with a dog in a soccer field, I recommend you more…. more.
It’s like kicking a pillow. Because it’s soft, you don’t have to worry about breaking a window or even marking the walls. It’s fine if you’re snowed in and you can’t go out with your dog. Organize a soccer game in the living room instead!
For regular play, the seams keep it tight, and because the ball is not overloaded, our dogs can easily wrap their jaws around it. I highly recommend it.

Footballs for dogs that are not restrained.
We generally like Planet Dog Toys. However, at 5 inches, their Orbee Tuff football looked more like a throwing ball than a soccer ball. It’s not a sealed balloon. There’s a hole at both ends that you don’t immediately see when you shop online. But I appreciate it was made in America.
A newer model from Nerf, Soccer Crunchball, has completely eliminated squeaking. Instead, it has a material that needs to be properly compressed to create a coherent sound. It didn’t always work in our tests. Our dogs preferred the old squeaky version.
The interactive treatment of football had some disadvantages that prevented us from recommending it. First of all, he can’t take big bites. Big dogs, like. B. Boxer or Rottweiler, quickly make their way through the soft rubber. Small dogs will also be disappointed. The small dog biscuits we used fell through the holes.
Ethical Pet’s Spot footballs are made of spring latex and are available in packs of three. At a depth of 5 cm they pose a risk of suffocation. I can’t even recommend these soccer balls for a small breed like the Pomeranian or Chihuahua, and the chicks fail quickly.
The Gnawsome Squeaker football with rubber spikes is a great success. It was stronger than our first choice, which our dogs loved. However, the spikes attached to the ball started to come loose after just a few play sessions. If it had been done better, it would have been our best choice.
Ethical Pets has produced the only plush football specially designed for dogs. With 4½ inches it was quite a size. Oh, and squeaky! However, it was far less sustainable than our first choice. I also noticed that he spilled a small amount of fluff spilling around on my couch.
Paw Paw dog football had a tug-of-war handle on both sides. Unfortunately, the ball went in at the first opportunity. Then the situation started to deteriorate rapidly.
What is dog soccer and does your dog need it?
At first glance, dog soccer looks like Major League Soccer.
But, as you will soon learn, playing soccer for dogs makes a very important difference.
Your dog thinks he plays soccer like this….
alt= Best football for dogs of all sizes, width=233 height=161 data-ezsrc=http://server.digimetriq.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/1608639877_775_4-Best-Dog-proof-Soccer-Balls-For-Dogs-Of-All-Sizes.jpg />
But dogs don’t play football with their paws, they use their mouths.
When you play soccer, your poop actually looks like this….
alt= Best football for dogs of all sizes, width=468 height=330 data-ezsrc=http://server.digimetriq.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/1608639878_104_4-Best-Dog-proof-Soccer-Balls-For-Dogs-Of-All-Sizes.jpg />
When powerful jaws and teeth, as sharp as daggers, bite, conventional football has no chance. He’ll slip away and show off.
If your dog loves to hunt balls, he may even be the reason for your first soccer game….
alt= Best football for dogs of all sizes, width=235 height=162 data-ezsrc=http://server.digimetriq.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/1608639879_667_4-Best-Dog-proof-Soccer-Balls-For-Dogs-Of-All-Sizes.jpg />
Nothing makes a friendly match quicker than a knockout football game.
Even worse: If your dog is a small child, he will love to play with your soccer ball. Some dogs like to destroy toys.
A conventional football just can’t stand this kind of wear – it’s too fragile.
If you want to play football with your dog, you need a football that is safe for dogs. These durable balls are designed to remain stable even if your dog bites hard.
Made of durable materials such as rubber, these balls are puncture resistant. Even if a dog’s sharp teeth penetrate the surface of a football, don’t let the ball deflate.
It should be noted that although dog soccer balls are durable, I would not call them indestructible. See, it’s best to use them as accompanying toys.
At the end of the game the ball must be put aside until the next game. This increases the life span of the dogball enormously.
You may have encountered hard plastic balls similar to those of a soccer ball. They are made of thick, rigid plastic and can be described as indestructible. Why don’t you use them as a soccer ball? They have some drawbacks….
First of all: When your dog bites into hard plastic, sharp edges and peaks appear. This is clearly visible on the picture above. These sharp parts can cut your dog when he’s carrying the ball, so he needs to be sharpened regularly to avoid injury.
Also, these plastic bullets are too stiff to be kicked. Speaking of which…
That’s why I like to use a soccer ball during the game. We can kick him! If you’re tired of bending over to pick up balls, hitting a soccer ball is a refreshing change of pace. Plus, you won’t get any more dog bibs!
If your dog likes to play in the water, choose a floating football. Although most do, you should not assume that this is the case unless the manufacturer specifically states so. You wouldn’t want to catch football at the bottom of a lake or a swimming pool, would you?
I would like to add that the traditional size of dog balls (about 8 inches) is more suitable for medium and large breeds. Small dogs may have difficulty wrapping their jaws around the large size of the ball.
Luckily there is a wide choice of soccer balls, also for your pint. Some soccer balls have grooves that make it easier for a small mouth to grab. Others are miniature versions of a soccer ball. Whatever dog you have, there’s a football toy in the suit.
If you want to buy a traditional football, I advise you to choose size 3. This is the smallest adjustable football generally used by children under the age of 8. With a 24-inch circumference, it’s easier to squeeze than adult bales.
A soccer ball is a dog toy that is best used under supervision. They’re meant to be hunted and carried, not snatched.
When the soccer game is over, remove the soccer ball and give your dog something heavier to play with, for example. B. a good chew toy!
Have you decided that a football is a good toy for your dog? Nice! All you have to do is consult these top players to choose the best football for your dog…
