In this post I will try to describe the main reasons why Outlook 2019/2016/2013/2010 does not display images in the body of the email and how to solve this problem.
Outlook has many settings and features that prevent attached or linked images from being displayed (downloaded) in the message text. Let’s try to describe the most typical problems.
By default, Outlook disables the automatic loading of images from third party websites into the body of the message. In this case you will see a red X and the following message instead of the image : Click here with the right mouse button to download the pictures. To protect your privacy, Outlook has prevented this image from being downloaded automatically from the Internet.
You can download the images one by one or at a time in the body of the email when you click on the message Click here to download the images. To protect your privacy, Outlook has prevented the automatic downloading of some images in this message and has selected the option Download Images.
To automatically download images of certain trusted senders, you can add them to the list of trusted senders or domains. Then tick the Confidence box on my contacts’ emails.
You can also enable automatic image uploading to Outlook: File -> Options -> Trust Center -> Trust Center Settings -> Do not automatically check the box for HTML emails or RSS feeds.
Because this setting is potentially dangerous, you should add the URLs of your partners, Internet URLs, and external sites that store images to the list of trusted sites in Internet Explorer.
Images in Outlook may not be displayed when all email messages are displayed in plain text. To view the images, go to File -> Options -> Trust Center -> Trust Center Settings -> Email Security and make sure the option Read all emails in plain text is disabled by default.
In some cases, Outlook may indicate that the linked image cannot be displayed. The file may have been moved, renamed or deleted. Make sure the link refers to the correct file and the correct location of the message, not to the attached/linked images.
.
In this case, first check the settings of the proxy server in Internet Explorer : If the proxy server settings in Internet Explorer are not correct, Outlook will not be able to download images from the Internet. If you are not using a proxy server for Internet access, make sure it is disabled (Control Panel -> Network and Internet -> Internet Settings -> Connections -> LAN Settings).
Also turn off the Do not save encrypted files to disk option in the Advanced tab of IE settings and restart Outlook.
If you don’t see a red X and there is an empty rectangle that matches the size of the original image in the email, it is likely that the image placement option is enabled in Outlook (this is useful if your internet connection is slow or unstable).
In Outlook 2016/2013/2010, you can check whether this option has been activated by creating a new e-mail (Ctrl+N). Then go to File -> Preferences -> Mail -> Editor Preferences -> Advanced and make sure that the option
Show images in the Show e-mail content section is disabled and the option Show images and text on screen in the Show e-mail content section is checked. After making the changes, restart Outlook.
Outlook may not display images in email messages if your temporary Internet file folder is damaged or full. In this case, it’s easier to recreate them.
Log in to the computer under another account with administrator rights, find the folder of the user causing the problem and delete it: C:User%UserName%AppDataLocalMicrosoftWindowsINetCache (in Windows 10) or C:User%UserName%AppDataLocalMicrosoftWindowsTemporary Internet Files (in Windows 7).
This removes Word, Excel and other temporary Microsoft applications.
When you open an attachment, Outlook automatically saves all attached files and images in a special cache folder. If the size of the cache directory exceeds a certain limit, Outlook may not display the images correctly. In this case it is advisable to empty the cache folder. The path to the cache folder is set in the OutlookSecureTempFolder setting in the registry. You can find its value in the following registration key (depending on the Office version) :
- Outlook for 2010 : HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftOffice14.0OutlookSecurity
- Prospects for 2013 : HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftOffice15.0OutlookSecurity
- Prospects for 2016/2019 : HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftOffice16.0OutlookSecurity
In my case, the path to the Outlook cache folder is C:Users%username%AppDataLocalMicrosoftWindowsINetCacheContent.OutlookZDN24K12. Open this folder and empty its contents, then restart Outlook.
If you use a proxy server with basic authentication (rarely used) to connect to the Internet, Outlook cannot open HTTP links to images because authentication is required to access these images. Bur Outlook does not display a password prompt to authenticate the user to the proxy server.
In this case, go to the registry path HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftOffice16.0Common and create the parameter REG_DWORD called AllowImageProxyAuth with a value of 2. With this setting, Outlook will ask you to authenticate to your proxy server (once during an Outlook session). Here is the path to the registry setting for Outlook 2016. For other versions of Outlook, change the value to 14.0 or 15.0.
You can also see a red X icon instead of the images if the BlockHTTPimages parameter in reg HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftOfficex.0Common is set to 1. Delete this registry entry and restart Outlook.
